The projector is the most costly item and you will need to do some research on the best price and model. They can be rented but you can find one used on craigslist or ebay, you might even get the okay from your boss to borrow one for the weekend.
Since you will be showing the movie outside and not in a dark room you will need a projector that is a little more powerful than a projector used indoors. In a dark room where you can control the light you can use less lumen but since you are outside and there may be ambient light from inside the house, the neighbors house or streetlights you should get a projector with at least 2000 lumen power.
You might look at getting a multimedia projector that plays DVD’s and has a speaker system. Since this is what you are getting it for and you won’t need to hook up a DVD player or speaker system. It is one less thing to buy and to hook up. Plus most multimedia systems have jacks already designated for games like rockband or karaoke and other accessories. Since you will be using the projector at night finding one with a glow in the dark remote is a nice feature.
If your projector doesn’t come with a DVD player or the speaker system is not good enough for the amount of friends you have you will need to add that to your list of things to get and set up – another good reason to get a good multimedia projector!
Don’t forget to get some extension cords, some landscaping spikes to hold down any wires so no one trips over them and a cooler for some ice cold drinks. Pop open your drink and press play for your very own backyard movie night.
